The Snack That Loves You Back
Want to keep your heart healthy? Eat pistachios! There is growing evidence that shows a diet that includes tree nuts, such as pistachios, is associated with a healthy ticker.
Want some proof?
Pistachios are included in the FDA's qualified health claim, which states: "Scientific evidence suggests but does not prove that eating 1.5 ounces per day of most nuts, such as pistachios, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease. [See nutrition information for fat content.]”
Phyto-what?
Everybody’s
talking about cholesterol. Well, pistachios can help support
cardiovascular management thanks to something called phytosterols
(pistachios have in spades) which actually compete with cholesterol from
the diet for absorption.Good Fats
We all need some fat in our diet. Fat adds flavor which makes any snack a satisfying treat. The trick is to choose foods that contain good fats (unsaturated) as opposed to bad fats (saturated). Pistachios are a great choice of snack because they contain almost 90% unsaturated fat, i.e. the good stuff. So the next time you consider ordering french fries, choose a healthier, crunchier snack of pistachios instead.Antioxidant Power
Oxidation is a process that creates free radicals in the body, which can be harmful to your cells. Pistachios offer many different antioxidants, which can help to support the heart and the body.

My Thoughts:
I was recently sent a sampling of pistachios from Everybody's Nuts Pistachios, which consisted of the following flavors:
- Salt and Pepper
- Garlic and Onion
- Sweet Chili
- Roasted and Salted
Out of the four flavors sent to me, I enjoyed the Roasted and Salted bag of pistachios the most. Even though I like foods with garlic and pepper, it was hard to wrap my head around eating flavored pistachios. My husband on the other hand loved these flavors, with the sweet chili being his favorite. He is more of a nut eater than me -- that is, after I educated him years ago on the health benefits of nuts, especially pistachio nuts.
I am a big fan of pistachios for their source of fiber. Pistachios provide 3 grams of fiber per serving -- that’s more than many types of whole fruit. Just think, you would have to eat two plums to get the same amount of fiber, found in one serving of pistachios. As a busy mom the go, I love being able to grab a handful of pistachios and take along and snack on them in the car, or while waiting for an appointment. It is silly, but I find cracking open pistachio shells relaxing. Maybe it is because I know how good pistachios are for you. Or, maybe it keeps my hands busy.... Who knows? All I know is how great pistachios taste, especially those from Everybody's Nuts Pistachios.
If you are a fan of pistachios or nuts and love to try flavored nuts, why not pick up a bag or of the flavors I listed above. I would love to hear your thoughts on how they taste. In the meantime, off to grab a handful of pistachios to snack on! :-)
