Feature Friday -- Prima Princessa's, The Nutcracker on DVD (Review and Giveaway)

This past week I spotlighted the two women behind Prima Princessa, Mary Kate Mellow and Stephanie Troeller.  If you missed my spotlight interview with them, click here to read it now.  Today, I wanted to share more about one of their DVD's, The Nutcracker, which I had the opportunity to view with my daughter.  And, with the holidays right around the corner, I thought now would be a good time to share a great gift idea for the little ballerina in your life.

Savannah is such a fan of Angelina Ballerina on Sprout, that I couldn't wait to see her reaction when we sat down to watch The Nutcracker on DVD a few weeks ago.  Ever since she was born, she has loved music, and whenever she hears music, be in the car, in the house or out and about, she will stop and begin dancing.  It is the cutest thing.  We are not sure were she gets her rhythm, as her Dad and I are not dancers.  We'll have to wait and see if she decides she wants to take dancing classes when she gets older, or if it is just a phase or hobby.  Either way, it was good to be able to show her this DVD, about a famous holiday ballet.  Not only is this a great production put on by the Birmingham Royal Ballet, but it is also a great educational DVD to introduce budding ballet dancers to dance steps and more.  The DVD is set up to show professional ballerinas performing each scene, and then it breaks away to teach your little one the dance steps they just saw.  What a great way to get your little ones moving.  This DVD is not such for little girls.  They do a wonderful job in showing young boys enjoying dancing and playing around.  The various steps demonstrated are the passé, glissade, sauté, sauté arbaresque, and echappe sauté. Each word is shown on the scene, as the narrator pronounces the words.  And, only running about an hour, this is the perfect length for little ones who don't have a wide attention span to sit for long.  The DVD goes by fast with the dance breaks, so your child will stay engaged the whole way through.  There are also bonus features that include arm positions and Port de Bras, holiday party, freeze dancing and crafts that you need to check out.

Overall, this is a great way to introduce your children to the world of ballet and let them dance off some of their energy.  My daughter couldn't sit still -- she danced the whole way through.  I will definitely be checking out their other titles available, including Swan Lake (see my giveaway below)  and their recent release, Sleepy Beauty, which came out October 4th at Amazon.
