Summary:
Have you met a more stylish pint-sized fashionista than Birdie? In Sujean Rim's BIRDIE'S BIG-GIRL DRESS, Birdie is looking forward to her birthday! But when she grabs her favorite dress, she realizes that—oh no!—it's too small. As she tries on dress after dress, Birdie soon realizes that all she needs to find the perfect outfit is a little imagination. Sujean's illustrations are so clever and beautiful—she combines watercolors with paper and fabric collage as she did in Birdie's Big-Girl Shoes.
My Thoughts:
Birdie's Big-Girl Dress is a follow up to Rim's 2009 release, Birdie's Big-Girl Shoes, which was also a big hit with little girls. In this story, we follow Birdie and her mom as they are in search of the perfect dress for Birdie's birthday party. After trying on dress after dress, Birdie ends up choosing a vintage dress that she finds in the attic.
I especially loved the watercolor illustrations in this book. These colorful illustrations really tie the whole story together and keep you engaged. It is always nice to illustrators/authors choosing textured and watercolor illustrations to depict the stories. They really do make the story line stand out.
This book feels similar to I Had a Favorite Dress, which I reviewed last week. The only difference is that Birdie takes recycled clothes from her grandparents, instead of recycling her own favorite dress.
Overall, this is another great book to share with your little girl. The storyline is easy to understand and will get your little one thinking about creative ways to pair her clothes to create a new fashionable attire. They will also like beautiful illustrations done by Sujean. And, who knows, maybe they will want to go vintage and use some of your recycled clothes as they get older to dress up their wardrobe.
