Summary:

Frederico is a little mouse with a big dream: he wants to become a violinist. Each day he watches as Stradivari makes his famous violins. Each night, he sneaks into the workshop to play. But the violins are too big! Then, unbeknown to Frederico, Stradivari sees him playing and begins carving a tiny device. Could it be a famous Strad especially for Frederico?

My Review:

I just loved sharing this book with my daughter, Savannah. The author, Mayra Calvani, does an excellent job of teaching the reader about the famous violin maker, Antonio Stradivari, as well as the parts of the violin.  I am not musically-inclined myself, but always had a fascination with the violin, and secretly wished to be able to play it.  This is a great book to read to a young child, and introduce them to the violin and its parts.  Who knows, you may even spark an interest in them wanting to learn how to play it. 

Even if your children are not into musical instruments, they will fall in love with Frederico, the mouse and this heartwarming story of a mouse and a passion to learn how to play the violin.  Children will also learn about kindness, as seen by the generous gift Stradivari gives the mouse in the end.  The story is not only fun and entertaining to read, but the illustrations are just breathtaking.  As a reader, you felt like you were looking at Stradivari's actual workshop, watching the master work.

I am so happy to have stumbled across Mayra Calvani and her work.  Now, I have a new children's author to follow, and continue to add her books to my daughter's book collection.
