What Have I Done For Love?

With Valentine's Day around the corner, I am in search of the perfect greeting card for my husband.  This year is even more special, as we are celebrating the first year with our daughter, Savannah.  My husband and I have been together for over 13 years, and met in college.  We were voted college sweethearts, and are happy were we are today.  We live in our dream home in Connecticut, with our 3 rescue dogs and beautiful little girl.  What more could we ask for?

I remember back in college, I would send my husband, Enrique, poems I wrote, as well as some of my favorite poems, so show how much he meant to me, and how in love with him I was.  One of my favorite poems is by Pablo Neruda, and was featured in one of my favorite movies, Patch Adams.  If you are not familiar with this poem, it goes like this:

XVII (I do not love you...)

I do not love you as if you were salt-rose, or topaz,
or the arrow of carnations the fire shoots off.
I love you as certain dark things are to be loved,
in secret, between the shadow and the soul.

I love you as the plant that never blooms
but carries in itself the light of hidden flowers;
thanks to your love a certain solid fragrance,
risen from the earth, lives darkly in my body.

I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where.
I love you straightforwardly, without complexities or pride;
so I love you because I know no other way

than this: where I does not exist, nor you,
so close that your hand on my chest is my hand,
so close that your eyes close as I fall asleep.
