Summary:

Restoring their faith in God and in Life.

Matthew Stevenson is a troubled kid from a broken home. When he vandalizes the local church to get back at his parents, Matthew has to repair the damage to the church to avoid criminal charges. While working at the church, he meets Ernest (John Ratzenberger), an accomplished wood carver who created the intricate woodwork decoration that Matthew destroyed. Ernest has become something of a hermit, but reluctantly comes out of reclusion to help repair the church. Now Ernest and Matthew must work together to preserve the church's beautiful antiquity, and along the way, they also manage to restore their faith in God and in life.

My Thoughts:

I love watching wholesome family films that provide a message, besides being entertaining.  When you watch this movie, starring John Ratzenberger, you will learn about the power of faith, forgiveness, family and friendship.  The movie centers around a teen named Matt, whose parents are getting a divorce.  Upset, he lashes out by vandalizing a local church and its handmade woodcarvings done by Ernest Otto (J. Ratzenberger).  To avoid criminal charges, Matt has to work with Mr. Otto in repairing the damage done to Mr. Otto's intricate carvings.  As they begin to work together, an unlikely bond forms.  As the movie progresses, Matt opens up to Mr. Otto about his parents divorce.  Mr. Otto helps Matt cope with his family problems, by teaching him about Jesus and his teachings.  In the end, Matt and his parents are brought back together, thanks to faith and Jesus.

I love the positive messages this film shares with viewers.  And, because of this, The Woodcarver would make for a  great family film to watch together.  My daughters are too young to watch this film, but my husband and I enjoyed watching it over the weekend, and hope to instill some of these beliefs in our daughters.  After watching this film, you can't help but talk about the storyline and WWJD. I am so glad that I was able to watch this Dove Approved DVD, which is now out on DVD.
